Community Organizer

Position Description:
The Community Organizer will work as part of the organizing team to increase our membership and to develop strategic campaigns to help members organize toward structural change on the issues they care about. By working strategically, Communities United For Action (CUFA) organizers will train people to be community leaders that can successfully influence public policy and business practices.

Priorities:
• Recruit and train members who are concerned about issues impacting their lives.
• Work with members on a team that will advance strategic campaigns related to these issues.

Responsibilities:
• Recruit new CUFA members by developing relationships with groups, attending community meetings, door knocking, phone banking, and using social media to build CUFA’s power.
• Conduct one-on-one meetings with members and prospective members in their homes, when possible, to build relationships, uncover self-interests, develop clarity, and gather information.
• Convene leadership meetings with issue teams to plan and implement strategic campaigns to effectively address the issues of concern to our members.
• Develop the leadership skills of members to implement their campaigns successfully. This includes training leaders to host public meetings with decision-makers, coaching them to give testimony at public meetings, and helping them develop and implement direct action plans.
• Ensure good turnout for meetings. This could include but is not limited to making and distributing fliers and email alerts, reminding members to recruit people for meetings, posting to social media, making event turnout phone calls, and giving rides to CUFA members.
• Assist issue teams in doing political power analysis to develop strategic campaigns that include base-building plans that address the issues our members are concerned about.
• Work with organizing team to plan and write email blasts and website posts; explore using other social media as appropriate.
• Maintain database to keep track of meeting attendance and leadership development.
• Write and submit grant reports to the Executive Director.

Qualifications:
Previous experience working with a community organization required, two years preferred. Must be able to work as part of a socioeconomically diverse team. Excellent leadership skills and time management. Computer skills including social media required. Experience with decision-making, prioritizing tasks and managing details. Ability to consistently meet job requirements with limited supervision. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including some weeknights and one to three weekend days per month. Must be able to travel for training. Must have reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to door knock, including moving 1-3 miles. Must be able to traverse steps during door knocking with or without reasonable accommodations. Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds. Must be able to type on a computer.

Compensation:
$42,000-$45,000 per year, commensurate with experience. Generous paid time off, health insurance, and other benefits.
